Interpreting Through Stained Glass
Have you ever seen a stained-glass window? They take the same sunlight that illuminates the grey pavement or yellow flowers and use it to light up a gorgeous picture, made up of lots of different pieces of coloured glass. A normal window lets you see what’s outside; a stained-glass window tells you a story. Since every language chops the world up in different ways, might it be useful for interpreters to understand how languages act like stained-glass windows? Might we benefit from remembering that every language chops up the world differently?
